Combat Training Principles — Secrets For Staying Alive When ‘Rules’ Don’t Apply

‘You must practice with the intensity of real life situations or it becomes a game and you can be beaten’

Last Saturday night here in Las Vegas, Bernard Hopkins knocked out Oscar De La Hoya in the ninth round and won the undisputed Middleweight Championship of the World.

‘So what,’ you say?

‘I’m not reading this newsletter for boxing updates. I want the straight scoop on walking away alive from a vicious confrontation where violence is likely my only survival tool.’

I know this newsletter rarely deals with the combat sport world and even preaches the pitfalls of such training when it comes to the realm of life-or-death conflicts.

BUT… this combat sporting event is worth examining because of how Hopkins beat De La Hoya.

Bear with me even if you’re not a boxing fan. What I’m going to explain is crucial to your surviving a bad situation.

These two fighters traded punches for 9 rounds and most objective observers had Hopkins ahead but De La Hoya was surprisingly game for the first half of the fight.

Hopkins had landed a couple of solid blows but De La Hoya handled them fine… until that ONE punch in the ninth.

It was a big left hook to the body… specifically it directly struck the liver… and the fight was over in an instant.

De La Hoya went to the mat and was counted out — STILL CONSCIOUS — yet totally helpless.

If you see the tape of the fight you’ll see the strike and the textbook reaction we teach in Target Focus Training™ to a liver shot. Even with the eight ounces of padding in Hopkins’ gloves, the blow was too much for De La Hoya — the ‘Golden Boy’ of boxing — to withstand.

But here’s the HUGE take-away: Had YOU landed that same liver strike on some thug on the street you could have done anything you wanted to him. He would have been completely helpless… just as De La Hoya was unable to do anything other than react to the trauma triggered by the strike to his liver with a highly predictable spinal reflex reaction.

I’ve written to you numerous times in this newsletter the benefits of knowing and APPLYING targeting when you have to use violence. When I can highlight a well-publicized incident to help hammer this home for you, I will do just that!

Now I’m even beginning to see more and more combat sport fighters seeking out my training because they understand what Hopkins just proved again — TARGETING CAN AND WILL END A CONFLICT RIGHT NOW — regardless of the other guy’s strength, speed or skill.

De La Hoya said it best after the fight: ‘He got me right on the button. It didn’t matter how hard or soft it (the punch) was. I tried to get up but I couldn’t do it.’

You must be able to access ALL your targeting information when your life is on the line. In order to do that you need a system that gives you just such information, and more importantly, shows you exactly how to USE it. TFT does just that — it’s the only way I ever train anyone for violence.

What about you?

What targets do you know — besides the liver (gave ya that one here)? And more importantly, have you been trained to strike them in sequence WITHOUT using favorites. Finally, do you know exactly what to EXPECT when you hit your targets?

Believe me, it makes all difference in the world — just ask Oscar!

Until next time,
