‘Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler’ – Albert Einstein

‘Hey Dad, James Bond has that bad guy’s shoulder in a Base 4 Leverage’ spouted my 10-year-old son, standing there in the family room outfitted from head to toe in his Tony Hawk apparel.
And you know what?
Ya could’ve knocked me over with a feather. I’ll be damned if he wasn’t spot on!
See, we were watching a Bond movie during one of those weekend TV movie marathons the cable channels do and I really hadn’t been paying attention. Basically this was the gazillionth time I’d seen this movie and I was kinda zoned out.
Earlier in the day I had reviewed the TFT Base Leverage principles lectures we’ll include in the new live seminar product we’re releasing next month. I THOUGHT my son was busy playing Spiderman 2 on his new Nintendo DS, but obviously those little ears and eyes were elsewhere.
‘So how do you know that’s a Base 4 Leverage?’ I asked.
The little guy then stands up and uses his hand to describe the 3 ways a joint works and the resulting 6 leverages that are the basis for any joint break, lock, or submission hold.
He then mimics the way the shoulder was in the movie scene and goes back to his ‘hand jibe’ to show me how it was a Base 4 Leverage.
About then, a couple explosions go off on screen and he’s fully involved in the movie again.
Me? I still had that dumfounded look on my face you get when your kid totally surprises you with their ability to quickly apply knowledge.
It was all the more amazing to me because I don’t train my son in TFT. Even at 10, he’s far too young for the information.
I finally just smiled and realized that we had achieved what I always had as a goal with TFT. Namely, to reduce the chaos of violence by giving you easy-to- understand and apply Principles that always work.
All in a format so simple… even a fourth grader can get it!
Most people would have seen a ‘technique’ and wondered how to apply it. My son saw a principle and knew not only what was going on IN the joint but WHY it worked. He wasn’t the least bit interested in the technique… just the result!
Having knowledge and knowing how to apply it is one of the most important things in any endeavor. In the criminal’s realm of asocial violence… it’s critical.
Clear, concise principles that anyone can understand and apply under any circumstance together with an absolute focus on results is the proven way to deal with these violent situations.
So I learned two things this weekend:
1) TFT communicates the effective use of the tool of violence so well EVEN a 4th grader can understand it.
2) I need to make damn sure I’m careful what I ‘review’ around my little toe-headed ‘receiving beacon’!
Until next time,
