Can You Crosstrain Violence?

I haven't answered questions in a while so let's take a look at a few now. The first is from Shaun Haynam on cross training:

###

Mr. Larkin,

I've been reading your newsletter since 2004. As a recent college graduate (well, not so recent now I guess), I never quite had the jack to take the plunge and order the seminar. However, securing these DVDs has always been a goal of mine and I should, within the next month or so, be placing my order. I can't wait.

My question to you is this: as a somewhat avid marital artist, how will that training interfere with TFT's concepts? I train in BJJ and Muay Thai (doesn't everyone these days?), which to me seem very 'sport' oriented despite my instructor constantly trying to relate different techniques to the 'street'.

I'm sorry but I just don't see myself taking someone into my guard in some alleyway. I love the training and the sparring and all that, but defending myself and others has always been my primary concern.

Thoughts?

(Tim): Well Shaun, I've answered this type of question in past newsletters but now there's a better option! Just head out and grab a copy of the September 2007 issue of Black Belt Magazine. It's on newsstands now.

On pages 90-96 you'll find an article I co-authored with TFT Master Instructor Chris Ranck-Buhr titled,"Competition vs Destruction".

This article covers this often asked question in a far more complete manner than I can in this newsletter format. You'll come away with a far better understanding of what happens when you mix the two.

Next is a Note from Mark about the TFT Seminar Series "Surviving The Most Critical 5 Seconds of Your Life:"

###

Thanks Tim,

Even in the first two sessions (DVDs), it was apparent that this program has a maturity and sincerity in its message, because the content is serious and for real. It has been refreshing and encouraging thus far. Finally... the core of BUSHIDO.

Kindest regards,

Mark McManus

###

(Tim): Thanks, Mark! 17 DVD's make up this Seminar Series so I hope to hear from you on how you liked the rest of the program. This Program is by far is the best way to see everything TFT has to offer.

You get to hear from many different TFT instructors and see how each session is principle-taught and not rehearsed.

A couple of times I've even included the same lectures from different seminars just so you can see how we never repeat a session verbatim. The instructors have this info down cold. You hear it in their voices and see it in the results.

Glad the passion of the instruction comes across to you. I've never met a more dedicated group of instructors than the group I work with in TFT.

Finally, Tony Hughes writes in to say:

###

Hi Tim, I haven't really got a question. I'd just like to make a comment.

I'd love to buy the 17 DVD set "Surviving The Most Critical 5 seconds Of Your Life", but I really can't afford it... and I wouldn't survive 5 seconds if I tried to buy it secretly and my wife found out!

But I still want to receive the newsletter because I think you do give really good self-protection information out.

Please keep the useful information coming in the newsletters, lad.

Tony

###

(Tim) Tony, I appreciate you taking the time to let me know you enjoy these newsletters!

Many people write to explain their budgets just don't allow for them to purchase a product or attend TFT live trainings at this time but that they plan to in the future. That is the very reason I try to give back by writing these newsletters.

Our price points are where they are because of the quality and sheer quantity of critical information provided to serious practitioners of self protection like you.

But I will continue to write about the TFT approach, and about the principles and methods needed to navigate the world of asocial violence.

###

If you, like Tony, find these newsletters useful, please let me know. It is always great to hear from you all whether or not you've bought anything from us.

Until next time,

Tim
